Delhi riots: A year on, Jamiat helps families rebuild homes

The Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind has come forward to help the victims rebuild their homes and handed over constructed houses to the riot-hit victims in Delhi. Along with houses and shops, the Jamiat also held the inauguration ceremony of Madina Mosque and Madrasa Ashab-e-Safa in North-East Delhi.

New Delhi: After hundreds of houses were burnt to ashes in the Delhi riots last year and families had no place to live, the Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind has come forward to help the victims rebuild their homes.

The Jamiat handed over constructed houses to the riot-hit victims in Delhi on Friday.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Maulana Mahmood Madani, General Secretary of Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind said that the organization has tried to help the riot victims without any discrimination on the basis of religion.

He said that the organization has helped Hindu families also who were affected by the riots in North-East Delhi last year.

Madani inaugurated the houses built for the victim families in the riot-hit area of Shiv Vihar in North-East Delhi.

Along with houses and shops, the Jamiat also held the inauguration ceremony of Madina Mosque and Madrasa Ashab-e-Safa in the area.

Most of the victims told ETV Bharat that they did not receive full help from the Delhi government but the Jamiat came forward and helped them when they were in need.

According to the Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind, the organization has re-built 166 houses that were destroyed in the Delhi riots, while 46 shops have also been re-built.

The Jamiat had also rebuilt about 224 shops in the Gokalpuri tyre market that were destroyed during the riots. Besides, 10 Mosques have also been constructed in Delhi with the help of the organization.

On February 24, 2020, riots erupted in North-East Delhi after clashes between the Citizenship act supporters and protesters spiralled, leaving at least 53 people dead, around 200 injured and also led to extensive destruction of property, including houses, shops, schools as well as religious places.
