Bolpur: Two individuals were killed and four others sustained critical injuries, including two children after a major fire broke out at a residential complex in the Birbhum district of West Bengal on Monday evening.
Police said that a fire broke out on the first floor of a five-storey building in the Bolpur area. A fire tender arrived at the scene shortly after being informed, but it was unable to control the flames. Consequently, two additional fire engines were dispatched to help manage the situation.
Firefighters rescued trapped residents by breaking through an iron grill and using a tall ladder, according to officials. The injured individuals were taken to Bolpur Sub-Divisional Hospital, where two of them succumbed to their injuries, as reported by a medical facility official.
“The rescue operation is still underway and the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained,” Birbhum Superintendent of Police Amandeep said.
