Coin collections from Mughal era to independent India

Numismatist Ram Singh has a unique collection of coins which include coins from the ancient period and he is constantly achieving new accomplishments in his pursuit.

Korba: Hobbies and passions are invaluable and are a great way to destress. While some hobbies are all about relaxing and taking and taking time off, some are meant to be fulfilling. Chhattisgarh's Ram Singh Aggarwal has found passion in coin collecting and has spent around two lakh rupees on his hobby.

A numismatist, Ram Singh has a unique collection of coins which includes coins from the ancient period and he is constantly achieving new accomplishments in his pursuit.

Ram Singh Agrawal is the President of the District Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Korba and says he got introduced to the coin collection in the 1970s by a bank manager.

From Mughal era to independent India, Chhattisgarh man has coins from all period

When Ram Singh was visiting a UCO bank in connection with his business, he met the bank manager who informed him about the coin factory Mint. He was also told that from time to time, the Government of India issues some coins in the form of heritage, which he [Manager] keep ordering from time to time.

Ram Singh was impressed by the bank manager's collection of coins and since then he started his own collection of coins.

He ordered his first coin in 1974

In Ram Singh Agarwal's collection, one can find coins ranging from the Mughal and British period to 1000 rupees coins issued by the Government of India. To fulfil his passion, Ram Singh orders heritage coins by ordering them through Demand Draft (DD).

Ram Singh ordered the coin for the first time in 1974 by order. Since then, his passion has grown stronger with time.

Ram Singh’s collection includes several rare coins

  • 1500 AD coin belonging to the Mughal period which has writings in Urdu script
  • He also has coins bearing the image of Ram, Sita, and Hanuman.
  • Coins bearing the image of George King of 1700 AD

Several East India Company Coins

  • 1000 rupees coin on completion of thousand years of Brihadisvara temple
  • 150 rupee coin issued on the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda
  • 150 rupee coin issued on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi
  • 550 rupee coin issued on 550th Prakash Parv of Guru Nanak Dev

To make the collection of coins richer, Ram Singh Agarwal has travelled far and wide to about 30 countries.

He says that wherever he goes, he brings currency from that country. In this manner, when he visited different places in India, he collected old and unique coins from the temples there.

Ram Singh says the zeal for coin collection has given a different identity to him.
