IND vs ENG, 3rd Test: Record of India's most successful captain at home awaits Kohli

Ahmedabad: After India levelled the four-Test series 1-1 in Chennai handing England a massive 317-run defeat in the second Test, captain Virat Kohli equalled former India skipper MS Dhoni's record of most Test wins (21 matches) at home. India lost the first Test in Chennai by 227 runs.

In the second Test, while chasing a 420-run target, England's second innings got wrapped up for mere 164 runs that saw Kohli winning the 21st Test match of his captaincy tenure. It is the most for an India skipper at home.

Now, if the Indian team beat England in the third Pink-Ball Test starting on February 22 at the refurbished Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad, Kohli will become India's most successful Test skipper at home with 22 wins. And he would eventually break Dhoni's tally of 21 wins.

Among the other Indian captains, Mohammad Azharuddin won 13 Tests while Sourav Ganguly and Sunil Gavaskar won 10 and 7 Tests, respectively, on home soil.

In the meantime, another personal milestone awaits Kohli at Motera as with 3,703 runs he is just 23 runs away from breaking Dilip Vengsarkar’s tally and becoming the 6th highest Test run-getter in India.

Chestheshwar Pujara and Kohli will have chances to join the likes of Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Viswanath in Ahmedabad. Pujara and Kohli are 45 & 12 runs away from becoming the 3rd Indian batsmen to score 1,000 Test runs against England at home after Gavaskar (1331) and Viswanath (1022).
