New York: Families of victims of police brutality and their supporters held a protest rally in New York City on Tuesday.

Hundreds of people joined a more than a dozen families affected by police violence at the rally to demand the immediate defunding of the New York Police Department.

Speakers called for police accountability and transparency spurred by the national uproar over the death of George Floyd.

The rally was followed by a march through city streets as New York lawmakers strive for a new era of police accountability.

Legislators are poised to repeal a state law that has long kept police officers’ disciplinary records secret, one of several steps to rein in officers.

Eliminating the law, known as Section 50-a, would make complaints against officers, as well as transcripts and final dispositions of disciplinary proceedings, public for the first time in decades.
