Bengal police busts drug racket, seizes 257.8 kg cannabis and Rs 1 cr

West Bengal police on Sunday arrested five people and busted an inter-state drug supply racket. Police also seized huge amounts of cannabis and cash from them.

Paschim Bardhaman (West Bengal): In a major crackdown, police teams from the Asansol and Durgapur busted an inter-state drug supply racket and seized huge amounts of cannabis and cash from them. Five accused were arrested by the police in the course of the bust, according to the police on July 19.

257.8 kilograms of ganja (cannabis) and over Rs 1 crore in cash were recovered from the possession of the accused by the police team.

Similarly, while checking a goods train going to Darshana (Bangladesh) from Gede (India), the Border Security Force (BSF) troops on July 18 seized goods worth Rs 46.5 lakhs from a wagon which were being smuggled to the neighbouring country.

Earlier, on July 19, Border Security Force (BSF) seized over 60 packets of heroin from the Ravi river that flows along the India-Pakistan international border in Punjab's Gurdaspur on Sunday. A 1,500-metre-long nylon rope was tied to the consignment of drugs in order to enable someone to pull it towards the bank.

In a similar incident, Excise Department officials seized around Rs 2.87 crore cash belonging to Hawala operatives from a car on July 14 during a routine vehicle checking at Toominadu on the national highway in Manjeswaram which is 28 km north of Kerala's Kasaragod district.

A Mangaluru-based youth was also arrested by the police in connection with the incident.

The money along with some gold jewellery was found in a sack inside the car. During the interrogation, the youth revealed that the money was brought to hand over to a person in Manjeswaram. A case has been registered and further investigation into the matter is underway.
