New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Central government to file an affidavit on a Public Interest Litigation regarding non-provision of mid-day meals to children due to closure of anganwadis amid COVID 19 pandemic.
The petitioner had contended before the court that many children are suffering through malnutrition after the anganwadi centres have closed and food is not available to the children.
SC asked the central government to respond on the issue within 2 weeks.
Earlier in March, the Supreme Court took suo moto cognisance of the non-availability of mid-day meals to children due to the closure of schools in the wake of novel coronavirus outbreak.
Midday meal scheme, which aims two vital goals of increasing enrolment of students from the disadvantaged sections of society and food security for poor children, has played a vital role in fighting malnutrition in children aged about 5-15 years under Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan and National Child Labour School.
