New Delhi: The BJP on Tuesday exuded confidence that it would get the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) passed in Rajya Sabha as it gets introduced in the upper house of the Parliament on Wednesday.
The bill, which seeks to give Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan was already passed by the Lok Sabha on Monday even as the opposition parties vehemently opposed and termed it as 'anti-Muslim'.
Speaking to the ETV Bharat here, BJP MP Jagdambika Pal said a lot many parties, including the Shiv Sena, supported the bill in the Lok Sabha, and they would support it in the Rajya Sabha too.
"We have got two important bills, including the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, passed in the Rajya Sabha when we did not even have the required number there," he said, adding that now party's position is better and getting the CAB passed would not be a problem.
Shiv Sena, which was a long-term ally of the BJP and had recently severed ties with the saffron party for political reasons in Maharashtra, a day after voting in favour of the bill in the lower house of the parliament has indicated that it may have to re-thing to support it in the Rajya Sabha, saying unless union government does not address their concern over it, the party would not support it.
Talking about the on-going protests against the CAB in different parts of the northeastern region of the country, the BJP MP said that party leaders would work in the region to help people understand the bill.
On being asked about AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi tearing copy of the bill in the Lok Sabha, the BJP MP said he was speaking the language of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan.
On the US Commission for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) expressing concern over the bill, the BJP leader said it was an internal matter of India and they must stay away.
