Aadi Vedan Theyyam to cure the ill effects of Karkidaka

The age-old tradition art form of Aadi Vedan Theyyam performed by the artists is believed to cure ill effects of the monsoons in Kerala. Aadi and Vedan are two different theyyams representing Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. The art form is believed to bring prosperity to families.

Aadi Vedan Theyyam to cure the ill effects of Karkidaka

Kerala: To cure and alleviate the ill effects of the 'Karkidakam' or the monsoonal miseries each year Aadivedan visits the homes of people in northern Kerala. Aadi Vedan Theyyam, a ritual art form, is believed to bring prosperity to families. The Karkidaka Theyyam is popular in both Kannur and Kasaragod region.

It is believed that this Theyyam (ritual) is performed to eradicate the diseases or miseries of the Karkidaka (monsoon) month.

Aadi and Vedan are two different theyyams representing Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. The ritual is performed during the Monsoon season.

The root of this traditional art form can be traced back to the 'Vana Parva' of 'Mahabharata'.

Aadi Vedan Theyyam to cure the ill effects of Karkidaka

The 'Vedan' conducts ritualistic dance movements to the drum beats inside the houses and sing ‘Vedan Song’ while chanting of verses.

People of the ‘Malaya’ community perform the Vedan Theyyam representing Lord Shiva and ‘Vannan’ Community people perform the Aadi Theyyam representing Goddess Parvati.

The households prepare the courtyards with a paste of cow dung and lights a traditional stem lamp (Nilavilaku). Rice and other grains along with vegetables will be kept in a winnow.

Thereafter, black 'guruthi' kept in a platter is thrown towards the south direction. The black 'guruthi' is charcoal mixed with water while the red 'guruthi' is the watery mixture of turmeric powder and quicklime.

It is believed that once the 'Vedan' does the ritual of throwing the 'guruthi', the household is purified of all the evils.

'Vedan' then collects all the grain and other offerings received in the bundle hung around the shoulder and heads for the next household.

Aadi Vedan Theyyam to expunge the privation of Karkidaka  Kasaragod



To put an end to the famine and scarcity of the dreadful period of karkidaka, Adivedan visits to residents of northern kerala. Aadi Vedan Theyyam, believes to bring prosperity to the family. It is believed that this Theyyam is performed to eradicate the sour and diseases of the Karkidaka month. Aadi and Vedan are two different theyams representing Parvathy and Siva and are performed by children during the Mansoon season and they visit each houses in this season. The Theyyam is performed using a single drum. The drums are played only at houses and not on the way. While playing the drum the and singing a particular song the Vedan slowly walks forward and backward in front of the house. This song is known as ‘Vedan Song’. People of the ‘Malaya’ community has the right to perform the Vedan Theyyam representing Siva and ‘Vannan’ Community has the right to perform the Aadi Theyyam representing Parvathy. The Vedan Comes First and then comes the Aadi. Both these Theyyams visits the houses during the heavy rain of Karkidakam or Monsoon. The Aadivedan Theyyam are welcomed with Nilavilaku(standlamps) and Nirapara, also Rice, Vegetables, Grains etc. These are for the Vedan. These are a way of living for them during the mansoon season when no Theyyams are performed.
