Under Seven Minutes Per Bill: Derek O'Brien takes jibe at Centre

Derek O'Brien Trinamool Congress MP in an impromptu address in the Upper House said they want peace in the House and outside as well. "In the first 10 days, Modi-Shah rushed through and passed 12 Bills at an average time of UNDER SEVEN MINUTES per Bill," wrote Derek on Twitter.

New Delhi: Parliament has been witnessing stormy sessions since the commencement of the Monsoon session. While Opposition parties creating ruckus, five Bills have been passed in Rajya Sabha. Taking a jibe at the Centre, Derek O'Brien Trinamool Congress MP in an impromptu address in the Upper House said they want peace in the House and outside as well. He also raised the issue of AITC MP attack in Tripura.

"We want peace in the House. We also want peace outside the House. Why are Opposition members bashed on the roads of Tripura now? See the video footage, Sir...these are MPs...We want discussion on Pegasus, farm laws...What's happening in Tripura," said Derek in RS.

Further, in a scornful remark, he posted statistics on the working hours of the Parliament on Twitter and wrote "Passing legislation or making papri chaat!" He was referring to the lightning speed of passing Bills as the stalemate between the Opposition and the Union Government continued.

"In the first 10 days, Modi-Shah rushed through and passed 12 Bills at an average time of UNDER SEVEN MINUTES per Bill," he wrote on the micro-blogging site. The graphic listing Bills posted by him showed that Coconut Development Board Bill was passed in the shortest time with one minute of discussion in Rajya Sabha. Meanwhile, the Bill that spanned the longest time of discussion was the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India Bill with 14 minutes.

Opposition parties have been pressing on Pegasus row, farm laws, Covid crisis since the commencement of the Monsoon Session. Vociferous sessions in the Houses kicked off with Union Minister of IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw's suo moto address in Lok Sabha stating that a media report on Pegasus snooping row is an attempt to malign Indian democracy.
