Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir): The Ministry of Home Affairs has confirmed the appointment of IPS officer RR Swain as Director General of Police one month before his superannuation from the service.
“With the approval of the competent authority Shri RR Swain currently holding the additional charge of DGP J&K, is hereby appointed to the post of DGP of J&K with effect from the date of assumption of charge and till 30-09-2024 or until further orders whichever is earlier,” reads the order issued by MHA today.
Swain, an IPS officer of 1991 AGMUT cadre, was posted asin-charge Director General of Police by MHA on OCtober 2023 while he also headed the investigation wing of the police (CID).
Swain, who took over as DGP J&K from November 01, 2023 in addition to his own duties, is superannuation from the service on September 30, 2024. It has to be seen whether he gets extension in his service as the Election Commission of India is gearing up for holding assembly elections in the UT as the Supreme Court deadline of holding assembly elections before September 30 is nearing.
Swain's confirmation as DGP coincides with the ECI's two day visit to Jammu and Kashmir for assessing the situation for conducting the polls. The two day's visit begins on Thursday when ECI led by the chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar will hold meetings with the DGP and chief secretary of the UT besides the six recognised political parties of the UT.
Two weeks ago, Swain had to face a political storm from the opposition political parties over his controversial statement that mainstream political parties were promoting militancy for thier politician gains.
