He retired from Indian Statistical Service as Deputy Director General with National Sample Survey. Has worked with the Office of the Registrar General India in various capacities including as Deputy Registrar General. Served as Techincal Adviser at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Ethiopia and was engaged as consultant on issues relating to census and civil registration by UNFPA, and other UN bodies including UNICEF. Was a member of the Technical Advisory Committee for 2011 and 2021 Censuses.
