Good evening ladies and gentlemen,
1. Today I am happy to announce a major breakthrough in the conduct of a highly successful surgical operation resulting in apprehension of the NSCN-IM area commander of Longding-Charaideo-Mon regions.
2. Based on specific information, a joint operation of Indian Army, Assam Rifles and Assam Police was carried out yesterday, resulting in the apprehension of Self Styled Major Anok Wangsa, Area Commander of NSCN-IM.
3. The operation was launched in the early hours of 14 July 2019, which involved search of a designated area and laying of ambushes on suspected routes to intercept the movement of the cadre. At around 03:30 AM, one of the teams intercepted a vehicle which was moving on the Namtola – Jampan Axis and immediately identified and apprehended the individual. Search of the vehicle yielded concealed weapons and ammunition.
4. The individual confirmed that he had hidden more weapons, ammunition and war like stores in his house located on Assam – Nagaland border. The teams then carried out a detailed search of his house which resulted in recovery of large cache of arms, ammunition and war like stores to include one AK-56 Rifle, many pistols and more than Rupees five Lakh in cash.
5. The apprehended individual is the deputy of Self Styled Major General Absolom Tangkhul of NSCN (IM) who is believed to be involved in the killing of MLA Mr Tirong Aboh. Anok has been constantly threatening the local population and demanding money from them, exposing the total contempt for Ceasefire Ground Rules that NSCN (IM) has. Irony could not have been more stark that only yesterday, NSCN (IM) while conveniently disowning its own cadre who was apprehended recently in Manipur, denied any wrong doings and had taken a moral high ground. But today we have another glaring example of its duplicity.
6. The local population has borne the brunt of this behaviour of NSCN-IM. Their cadres, in total contempt of Ceasefire Ground Rules, are moving around outside their designated camps intimidating businesses, traders and contractors and continue to collect unauthorised money for personal gains of few. The group has also attempted to disrupt peace in the neighbouring districts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
7. Apprehension of this individual has been greatly welcomed by the locals of districts of Mon (Nagaland), Longding (Arunachal Pradesh) and Charaideo (Assam). Let me assure everyone that security forces will continue in our endeavours to bring perpetrators of heinous crimes to justice and ensure safety of the population.
