LEADIN:
Female empowerment is topping the bill at this year's Lahooti Melo festival in Pakistan.
Thousands of students are flooding the two-day event to enjoy a cocktail of music, dance, art and keynote speeches on the liberation of women.
STORYLINE:
Jamshoro, Sindh Province, Pakistan - home to eleven schools, colleges and universities and the largest university campus in the country.
Today, the city is playing host to the fourth annual Lahooti Melo music and arts festival - which this year is dedicated to the empowerment of Pakistani women.
The festival offers two days of keynote speakers, music, dance, poetry and art.
19-year-old Rukhsar Khan is a second-year commerce student at Sindh University.
Coming from a middle-class family, she has three older brothers and travels to her lectures in Jamshoro from the nearby city of Hyderabad 15 kilometres away.
"Women's issues, including harassment, have been highlighted in most of the sessions," she says.
"Violence against women in our society is being emphasised. The theme is fascinating and the way all the speakers spoke was really interesting as how to save and protect oneself in a patriarchal society. Female education is key to female empowerment."
Khan believes it's only by having open talks on this level about women's issues that Pakistani girls will have the confidence to be themselves.
"I have learnt a lot from all the sessions and workshops I have attended," she says.
"Being a woman, I have learnt to work along men in a patriarchal society from all the discourses. And I liked it."
Artists, writers and film makers from all walks of life have gathered at the event to share their stories with the largely female, student audience.
Speaker, Mehtab Akbar Rashdi, a former lawmaker from Sindh, says Pakistan cannot make progress unless women are liberated, educated and brought into the mainstream of all spheres of life.
"This is actually creating an acceptance in society, where young people, and old people and the liberated people and little liberated people are actually being connected together," she says.
"And they are listening to each other and the idea of tolerance is being promoted."
The festival was created by Saif Samejo, the lead vocalist of a Sufi folk-rock band, called 'The Sketches.'
Organisers hope that they can inspire social change by connecting art, in all its forms, to everyday life.
"We (talked) about women, women violence, abuse, child abuse, these are the issues that Pakistani families unfortunately cannot talk with their children while sitting," says organiser, Sana Khoja.
"But these issues can be addressed with a soft form. You can address such issues through dance, through poetry, through music, through arts.
"So, this is an overall idea, we pick up a theme and we try to promote that theme through the very soft corner of the art."
'We Believe in Music' is the festival tagline.
After sunset, festival goers are treated to an evening of music and dance from a mix of mainstream and local artists.
Described by the organisers as "an event to take a deliberate pause and feed your mind, body and soul", the Lahooti Melo is set to become a permanent fixture in Jamshoro.
The Lahooti Melo 2019 took place 9-10 February.
