One of the most prominent incidents of pre-independent India 'Chauri Chaura' incident occurred in the Gorakhpur district of the Uttar Pradesh on 5 February 1922, when a large group of protesters, participating in the Non-cooperation movement, clashed with police, who opened fire. The town known for the 'Chauri Chaura' incident prompted Mahatma Gandhi to call off the non-cooperation movement and change the trajectory of the Independence struggle.
