Kolkata: Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) newly-appointed national secretary, Anupam Hazra courted a fresh controversy, after he reportedly remarked that he will hug West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee if he contracts Covid-19.
Addressing the media, Hazra said, "If, someday, I am found Covid-positive, I will go to CM Mamata Banerjee and hug her. She will understand the pain of those who suffered the disease and have lost their near and dear ones during the pandemic."
Hazra was interacting with the media at Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district when he made the remarks.
Reportedly, Hazra and the BJP workers were not wearing masks and social distancing guidelines were not followed during the meeting.
Meanwhile, the organisational restructuring of the BJP's central unit sparked discontent in its Bengal unit as senior leader Rahul Sinha, who was dropped as the national secretary, said that this is the "reward" he got for his dedicated service to the party for 40 long years.
Hazra, a former Trinamool Lok Sabha MP from Bolpur, was expelled from the party for 'anti-party activities'.
