Bolpur (West Bengal): Amid the 'Pratichi' land controversy, the 'Nobel Prize' committee tweeted an old picture of Amartya Sen riding a bicycle in Sonajhuri in West Bengal's Birbhum district.
The Nobel Prize committee's tweet, which is aimed at encouraging cycling, seems to be an apparent response to Visva Bharati vice-chancellor Bharati Bidyut Chakraborty's allegations that Sen never received any Nobel Prize.
In January, Chakraborty had claimed that Sen had never received any Nobel Prize. He said that the subject economics was not mentioned in the original list by Alfred Nobel. The original list included five subjects, he had said adding that the subject was actually included by the Sweden Central Bank. Chakraborty's statement had raised a storm in the academic circle.
"The Nobel Prize" committee's website mentions Amartya Sen as the "Nobel Laureate". Amartya Sen won the Nobel Prize in Social Welfare Economics in 1998. Tweeting the picture, the Nobel committee wrote, "Amartya Sen's bicycle played a key role in his research on the differences between baby boys and girls. After his assistant got bit by the children when weighing them, Sen decided to bicycle through the countryside of West Bengal, weighing the children himself." The Nobel Committee tweeted the picture of Professor Amartya Sen to encourage others to follow in his footsteps.

In the ongoing tussle with the economist over the disputed land issue, the Visva-Bharati authorities have alleged that Sen has encroached an additional 13 decimal of land. Even eviction notice was put up at Sen's 'Pratichi' residence in Santiniketan, asking him to vacate the land.
