Mamata slams Centre for issuing I-T notice to puja committees

In a series of tweets, Mamata Banerjee voiced dissent against income tax notice being issued to Durga puja committees and stated that her party will protest against the move on Tuesday.

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday criticised the Centre for issuing income tax notices to several Durga Puja committees here, saying festivals should be exempt from levies.

Banerjee said Trinamool Congress (TMC) would sit on a dharna in the city on August 13 in protest against the move of the BJP-led government at the Centre.

"The Income Tax Dept has issued notices to many committees who organize Durga pujas, asking them to pay taxes. We are proud of all our national festivals. These festivals are for all and we do not want any puja festival to be taxed. This will be a burden on the organizers," she tweeted.

Referring to the Ganga Sagar Mela, the chief minister said her government had withdrawn tax on the annual festival.

"Bangla govt withdrew tax, which was earlier there, on Ganga Sagar Mela. We protest and demand no taxation on Durga puja and Durga puja committees," Banerjee posted on Twitter.

The CM urged people to join the August 13 protest at Subodh Mallik Square in the city.

Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee slams BJP For Tax Notice To Durga Puja Organisers



Kolkata, 11 August : Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday lashed out at the BJP-led central government for tax notice issued to the Durga Puja Committees Forum, a top body of the worship organisers in the state. She slams centre in a Facebook post. Coming Tuesday TMC will make a protest in front of Subodh Mullick Square in Kolkata.



She said in her Facebook post, Festival is for everybody. We dont want any taxation on Puja Committee. This would be a huge pressure for organizers. We want Tax Free Puja . Bengal government has withdrawn tax from Gangasagar Fair in Makara Sankranti. 



The chief minister argued the puja committees in the state organise Durga Puja with donations from the common people and the sponsors, and accordingly, cannot be brought under the income tax net. 

She slams BJP and said, During the elections, they (the BJP) talk of the Hindu-Muslim religion and now they try to collect income tax from organisers of the Durga Puja. It's insulting. This is not right."  According to Bengal CM, BJP always trying harass the people of West Bengal.



The Forum, which comprises Durga Puja committees, has been asked by the Income Tax department to file returns on its expenses during the festival.
