Pithoragarh (Uttar Pradesh): Earthquake tremors were felt in Pithoragarh, a seismically sensitive district in Uttar Pradesh, Thursday morning. The magnitude has been measured at 3.1 on the Richter scale. According to the report released by the National Center for Seismology, the epicenter of the earthquake was 32 km north of Pithoragarh. The effect of this earthquake was seen in areas up to five kilometers from the district.
"Earthquake of Magnitude:3.8, Occurred on 22-01-2023, 08:58:31 IST, Lat: 29.78 & Long: 80.13, Depth: 10 Km, Location: 23km NNW of Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand," NCS tweeted.
According to the National Center of Seismology, the first quake was experienced at 6.15 am on Thursday. Since Pithorgarh falls in sensitize zone number 5, incidents of earthquake and landslides are frequent in the region. The epicenter of the earthquake was 32 km north of Pithoragarh district headquarters at a depth of about five km. There has not been any information on the damages caused due to this earthquake as yet.
The Uttarakhand state, in its entirely 'sensitive' from the point of view of earthquake. Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Pithoragarh districts of the state are considered 'very sensitive' and hence they come under Zone 5. In recent days, an earthquake of 3.8 magnitude was reported in Pithoragarh.
