Eight-year-old raped in Azamgarh village in Uttar Pradesh

The girl from Jiyanpur in Azamgarh district has been admitted to the District Women's Hospital for treatment. Police said the suspect has been arrested.

Azamgarh (Uttar Pradesh): A minor girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour in Uttar Pradesh less than 24 hours after another rape victim was cremated in controversial circumstances in the state.

The girl from Azamgarh district has been admitted to the District Women's Hospital for treatment. Police said the suspect has been arrested.

"We have received a complaint of rape of a minor girl today. A case was immediately registered. The accused has been arrested. He lives in front of girl's residence and used to visit her regularly," said Sudhir Kumar Singh, Superintendent of Police, Azamgarh.

The victim's mother alleges that the accused's house is next door, where the girl used to go often to play.

''He took her away from our home to his tent shop on the pretext of having a bath. When my daughter came back she was bleeding,'' the girl's mother said.

Seeing this, family members rushed her to the women's hospital where doctors said that the girl had been raped.

The medical examination of girl is being conducted and further investigation is underway.
