Repair work on Taj Mahal minaret to be completed soon

A minaret of the famed Taj Mahal is undergoing conservation by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Officials said that the repair works on one of the four minarets of the iconic Taj Mahal facing will be completed within 120 days.

Agra: The repair works on one of the four minarets of the iconic Taj Mahal facing will be completed within 120 days, officials said on Friday.

Reports had said that the stones of the Southwestern minaret had been damaged and needed replacement. Following which, repair works have been started by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Vasant Kumar Swarnakar, archaeologist, ASI, supervising the repairs told ETV Bharat that speedy completion of the minaret with perfection will be ensured soon.

"The conservation work of the south-western minaret of the Taj Mahal is being done. As many as 15 stones of the have deteriorated due to rainwater entering the minaret. The minaret remains dark, so scaffolding will be done by arranging the light inside the tower. and stones will be replaced," Swarnakar said.

"There will be an expenditure of about Rs 23 lakh in the conservation work of the south-west minaret of the Taj Mahal. The conservation work of this minaret will take about 120 days," he said.

"The height of each minaret of the Taj Mahal is 42.95 meters. Due to the height of the tower, mosaic and stones coming out of the border and patches of green were discernible on the surface of the mausoleum at the rear side facing the Yamuna," he added.
