Lucknow: Police foiled a self-immolation attempt by a 35-year-old woman in front of the Uttar Pradesh's Legislative Assembly.
The woman reportedly resorted to the extreme step complaining of domestic violence. However, she sustained severe burn injuries and was admitted to the civil hospital.
According to the police, she was a divorcee who later converted into Islam to marry a man named Asif. But after the marriage, Asif moved to Saudi Arabia leaving her back in India. According to the police, she alleged that his family harassed her constantly.
Speaking to media persons, Lucknow Police Commissioner Sujeet Pandey said, "She was bullied and tried to set herself on fire in front of the legislative assembly. The police personnel posted there rescued her."
"An enquiry is still underway. The police rushed her to a nearby hospital where she is being treated for burn injuries. Her health condition is said to be critical," Pandey added.
