Mahoba: A swarm of locusts attacked trees and crops in two villages in Charkhari area of Uttar Pradesh's Mahoba district on Saturday, officials said.
The swarm arrived in Swasamaaf village on Saturday afternoon but vigilant villagers used drums and other means to create noise to scare away the locusts and informed the officials, Deputy Director (Agriculture) G Ram said.
The Agriculture Department team sprayed chemicals on the trees where the locusts had taken shelter, killing thousands of them, G Ram said.
Later, the swarm reached Etwa village where also the insects were killed in large numbers, the official said.
He said locusts have been present in the jungles of Mahoba for the past five days and attacking different villages from time to time.
According to Ram, the villagers and farmers have been alerted and agriculture and fire department teams are also on full alert.
