Kannauj: Soon after the BJP appointed Adesh Kumar Gupta as the new chief of Delhi unit of the party, his families and closed ones went on a celebration spree in Gursahaiganj's Kannauj.

Sweets were distributed, bands were played at his ancestral home here, as his family members received greetings and well wishes from everyone.

At present, Gupta is a member of the standing committee of the North Corporation from the West Patel Nagar ward. Prior to this responsibility, Gupta was elected as mayor in 2018 by the BJP.

During his time at Madan Mohan Malviya Inter College, he became a part of ABVP in 1987. In 1989, Gupta was appointed as the full-time mayor of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.

After this, he was made Farrukhabad district chief in 1992, and in 1993 he was the Department head of Etawah.

He was also involved with BJP’s Yuva Morcha from 2004 to 2007.

In 2009, he became the Mandal president from West Patel Nagar and later the in-charge of Najafgarh.

Adesh Gupta moved to the capital in 1994 and was later elected as the national office secretary of the BJP Yuva Morcha.

Between 2009 and 2014, he occupied many positions in the Delhi BJP — from block to district to state level.

Experts have speculated that the selection of Gupta was made keeping the forthcoming corporation election in mind. The next MCD elections will be held in 2022. The announcement has also indicated the party’s future strategy — of strengthening grassroot workers, preparing the next line of leadership in Delhi, and increasing its focus on the Baniya community, which has traditionally been a BJP vote bank.

Though an old party hand, his appointment came as a surprise as he maintains a low profile.
