Mainpuri: Tension prevailed in Uttar Pradesh's Mainpuri district on Wednesday, after members of a 'land mafia' allegedly opened fire in a land dispute.
Ajay Yadav and Shailendra Singh-opened fire at landowner Jaspinder Singh and his family members in a dispute over illegal construction on his land. The two men are believed to have occupied Singh's land.
As per reports, when the landowner- Japinder Singh, whose plot is under Vishnugarh police station limits reached the spot to stop illegal construction at the site, the mafia men started abusing and threatening him. Later, when the landowner continued protesting, the duo opened fire at him and his family members.
However, no injuries have been reported but the incident stirred panic among the villagers.
According to sources, as the involvement of local police is suspected, the police continue to remain tight-lipped on the incident. In addition to this, the local police did not even reach the spot to control the situation.
Meanwhile, an audio of the victim and local police officer has surfaced in which the latter can be heard favouring the land mafia.
Also, the police did not pay heed to the complaint of the family which they registered in connection with the incident at a nearby police station.
