New Delhi: The Election Commission of India on Friday announced the schedule for by-election to the Rajya Sabha seat vacated by late MP Amar Singh in Uttar Pradesh.
The election will take place on September 11 and counting of votes will be carried out the same day. The vacancy was created after the death of MP Amar Singh on August 1, 2020.
The statement issued by Election Commission of India said," The Commission has decided to hold by-elections to Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh to fill up the vacancy."
ECI also directed the Chief Secretary of the state to depute a senior officer to ensure that the instructions regarding COVID-19 containment measures are complied with while making arrangements for conducting elections.
The notification for this seat will be issued on August 25 while September 1 would be the last date for nomination. Voting will take place on September 11 from 9 am to 4 pm. Counting of votes will begin at 5 pm.
Amar Singh had won the seat as an independent candidate supported by the Samajwadi Party.
