Hyderabad: The Telangana government is all set to make it mandatory to register vehicles purchased from outside afresh with the state Transport Department. As per an official, the Telangana registration number will soon be mandatory for owners of vehicles purchased from other states failing which the vehicles will be seized.

“After bringing them here, they are advised to change the registration immediately,” said the official. He said that for vehicles with registrations from other states including Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka, a No Objection Certificate (NOC) is not sufficient. The officials of the transport department said that life tax should be paid and TS registration should be done here as well once the new rule comes into effect.

As per official estimates, over 10,000 vehicles with registrations from other states ply on Hyderabad city streets every year. Motorists have flayed the latest move of the government asking why they should register the vehicles for the second time if they have already paid the registration charges at the time of purchasing the vehicles form outside states.

Pertinently, the Regional Transport Officer Kashmir had last year issued a similar circular asking the owners of vehicles purchased from outside to get their vehicles afresh. However the High Court there had in April last year, quashed the circular by the Regional Transport Officer Kashmir asking the petitioners to have their vehicles registered for assignment of new registration mark without their declaration in tune with the mandate of Rule 54 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.

The court had directed the Transport authorities to have the compliance of Section 47 of the Act, read with Rule 54 of the Central Motor Vehicles undertaken for assignment of new registration mark. The petitioners had submitted to the court that the RTO Kashmir is demanding 9% token tax from the owners of the vehicles even though their vehicles are duly registered outside J&K and have already paid life time tax.
