Chennai: The Madras high court on Friday expressed 'Dissatisfaction' over the appointment of Girija Vaidyanathan as a National Green Tribunal (NGT) expert member.
The court had been dissatisfied with the non-filing of documents by the union and State Governments regarding the appointment of Vaidyanathan and reserved the orders on the plea alleging that she didn’t have enough experience in dealing with environment-related issues.
Poovulagin Nanbargal, an environmental group, had earlier filed public interest litigation (PIL) in the Madras high court.
According to the petition, the NGT Act prescribes a minimum administrative experience of 15 years including five years in dealing with environmental matters in the Central or a State government. But in violation of the provision, Girija who does not possess five-year experience in handling environmental matters has been appointed to the post, the group alleged.
Reportedly, former Tamil Nadu chief secretary Girija Vaidyanathan was appointed as an expert member of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Southern Zone in Chennai. An official order in this regard was issued by the Principal Bench of NGT on April 5 and Vaidyanathan was appointed by the principal bench of the NGT in New Delhi on Monday.
