Chennai: The latest bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that North coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall in most places with isolated heavy rainfall on Tuesday, which will significantly decrease. This forecast comes as a relief for the people of Chennai and adjoining districts after cyclone Michaungh disrupted normal life in the area.
The severe cyclonic storm Michaung is also likely to make landfall on the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh between Machilipatnam and Nellore on Tuesday. The latest IMD bulletin states that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at a few places with extremely heavy falls at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on December 5.
Exceptionally heavy at one or two places is likely over north coastal and adjoining south coastal Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday, the IMD bulletin added. Residents in some parts of Chennai reported no rain since Tuesday morning. Power services have been restored in the areas in Chennai, however, train services to and from the city remain suspended.
According to police sources, At least five people died in rain-related incidents in Chennai. One died after a tree fell on him in the upermarket Besant Nagar area while two others died of electrocution.
The severe cyclonic storm Michaung over the West-central Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Tamil Nadu coasts moved north-northwest-words with a speed of seven kilometres per hour during the past six hours. "At 0230 hours IST on Tuesday, it was centred 20 km north-northeast of Nellore, 170 km north of Chennai, 150 km south of Bapatla, and 210 km south-southwest of Machilipatnam," the IMD bulletin added.
The Bulletin also stated that the system is now moving northwards close to the coast while some parts of the wall cloud region lie over land. The cyclone is likely to move nearly northwards parallel and close to the south Andhra Pradesh coast and cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam, close to Bapatala during the forenoon of Tuesday as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph, gusting to 110 Kmph.
