Chennai: As Tamil Nadu votes on Tuesday, biriyani makers across the state are seeing brisk business. The rice dish along with cheap liquor are said to be widely offered to lure voters to election rallies and win their support in the polls.

Political parties boast large turn out at rallies to send a strong message to rivals about their popularity, but organisers also ensure biriyani and liquor are handed out at the end of rallies to attract participants.

When the leader of a party comes calling to a town or a city, the onus falls on the party’s district secretary to organize a massive crowd and biriyani is the answer. Tokens are issued to rallyists who collect the food and drink as a price for listening to the speakers. Rallies often see fights among participants when there is a shortage of the promised food and beverage.

With the elections just a couple of days away, the biriyani shops across Tamil Nadu are operating in full swing, witnessing a roaring business. Several shops have employed more masters, chefs and catering staff with orders pouring in from political parties.
