Prized catch for Odisha fishermen! Rare fish sold for Rs 1.70 lakh

In a whopping price over Rs 1.43 lakh in an auction, fish locally known as Telia has been sold in Chandbali area of Bhadrak district. It was a risk he took amid inclement weather conditions and the result was a whopping Rs 1.70 lakh.

Bhadrak (Odisha): A huge rare species of fish, Ghol, locally called as Teleia was caught by a fisherman from Chandanipal area of Dhamra in Odisha's Bhadrak district on Friday and sold to a trader of West Bengal at a whooping price of Rs 1,43,000.

According to sources, the fisherman went into the deep sea from Dhamra port two days ago and returned with the rare fish.

The weight of the fish is about 22 kilogram and each kilogram of the fish will be sold at Rs 6,500. A large number of people gathered around the auction site to see the fish and participate in the bidding process for its possession, sources said.

Sources said that the fish is known for its medicinal value and in high demand in various countries.

Notably, the Ghol fish (Protonibea diacanthus) is a type of croaker fish usually found mostly in Indian and Pacific Oceans along the coast of Pakistan, Bangladesh and India.

The fish is exported in huge numbers to Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia for medicinal use.

Also known as 'Sea Gold', the fish is prized for the medicinal value of its fins, which are used by pharmaceutical companies to make dissolvable stitches.
