Pune: In a bizzare development, the Kothrud Police on Monday carried out the last rites of the remains of a teenager who had reportedly died 17 years ago.

According to reports, cops found the skeletal remains stored in a carton box when they were scouring through seized material stored in a room at the police station.

It later came to light that the bones belonged to a then 16-year-old Nikhil Ranpise who was allegedly murdered in 2002.

Police had found his charred body behind the MIT campus in 2002, following which the body came in their possession. As a court acquitted the accused in the teenager's murder case in 2006, it instructed the police to do away with all the seized material.

Though it is yet not clear why the cops then did not destroy the skeleton, present police officials decided to perform the last rites of the remains.

When the teenager's father expressed his inability to perform the last rites, the cops decided to go ahead themselves, and performed the rites at a crematorium in the city.
