In a first, Indian origin doctor becomes Scotland MP

Dr Sandesh Prakash Gulhane, who has his roots in Maharashtra's Amravati, has become the first Indian to become an MP in Scotland.

Amravati (Maharashtra): Dr Sandesh Prakash Gulhane, who has his roots in Maharashtra's Amravati, has become the first Indian to become an MP in Scotland.

Dr Gulhane was born in London to Prakash Gulhane and Pushpa Gulhane, who were then residents of Bhaji Bazar area in Amravati.

A doctor by profession, Dr Gulhane used to work at a hospital in UK's Kilbride as an Orthopaedic Registrar. Alongside, he gradually entered Scottish politics. Earlier this year, he declared that he will contest from Glasgow Pollok. He was fielded as a candidate by the Scottish Conservative and Unionist party and he went on to win the election.

During the pandemic, Dr Gulhane served as a frontline COVID worker.

Dr Gulhane's cousin Mahesh Suranje, a resident of Achalpur city in Amravati district, said, "My uncle Prakash Gulhane was working as an engineer at a private company in London. On May 8, we learnt that my cousin Dr Gulhane has been elected to the Scottish Parliament. We are extremely happy. His success, despite hailing from an ordinary family devoid of any political legacy, is a matter of pride for the entire district."

Dr is also involved in various social activities.
