Bridge collapse: 2 civic engineers suspended

Two civic engineers were suspended in connection with Thursday's foot overbridge collapse which claimed six lives and injured 31. lives. The directions were given by the civic chief following an enquiry conducted by the chief engineer (vigilance).

Mumbai: Mumbai Municipal CommissionerAjoy Mehta on Friday suspended two civic engineers in connectionwith Thursday's foot overbridge collapse which claimed sixlives.

Mehta also ordered a probe against them and adepartmental enquiry against two retired chief engineers ofthe Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The directions were given by the civic chief followingan enquiry conducted by the chief engineer (vigilance).

"Executive engineer A R Patil, who had supervised thestructural audit of the bridge in 2017-18 and an assistantEngineer S F Kakulte who had supervised its repair works in2013-14, were suspended and a departmental inquiry has beenordered against them," an official said.

Mehta also ordered a departmental enquiry against thethen chief engineer (bridges) S O Kori and the then deputychief engineer R B Tare (both retired).

"Charges will be framed against the officersaccordingly," the official added.

Six persons were killed and 31 injured after a sectionof the foot overbridge near a busy train station in southMumbai collapsed during evening rush hour on Thursday.
