Kolenchery elderly woman rape: Police arrest three, including a woman

Kerala police on Wednesday arrested three people including a woman in the 75-year-old woman rape case in Kolenchery. The trio was later produced before the court. Meanwhile, there was minor improvement in the health of the victim admitted to Kolenchery Medical College Hospital.

Ernakulam: Police arrested three persons, including a woman, in the case of the rape of a woman aged 75, here on Wednesday. Perumbavoor Chembarakki Vazhappillil Mohammed Shafi (50), Pangod Iruppachira Asharimoolayil Omana (66), and Omana’s son Manoj Krishnankutty (46) have been arrested by the police. All the three accused would be produced before the court on Wednesday.

Locals have informed the Police that the trio has been involved in many anti-social activities for quite some time now. The Police have confirmed that Shafi was the one who raped the woman.

Mohammed Shafi, the driver of a goods carrier vehicle, had reached a private company near the old woman’s house to deliver goods, on Sunday. Omana always used to ‘arrange’ for Shafi’s immoral activities at her house.

According to the Police, Shafi, the prime accused, told Omana that he ‘wanted a woman’, on Sunday. That was when Omana spotted the old woman, who suffers from mild memory problems, reach the shop near her house to buy some tobacco. Omana who stood nearby told the woman that she would give her tobacco and took her along to Omana’s house.

The driver waited at the house attacked the old woman immediately on she reaching Omana’s house. The old woman tried to resist him. However, she was physically overpowered and brutally raped by Shafi. Later in the evening, Omana took the old woman, who suffered from injuries all over her body and in a debilitated state, in an autorickshaw and dropped her at her house.

The old woman had told her family that she was unwell. She was then taken to a private hospital in Pazhanganad immediately. As the injuries were severe, she was shifted to Kolenchery Medical College Hospital on Sunday night. In the medical examination carried out at the Kolenchery Hospital, it was found that the woman had suffered from brutal sexual abuse. The Hospital authorities informed Puthencruz Police immediately.

The old woman suffers from wounds and contusions on her chest and abdomen, besides other parts of her body. The hospital authorities revealed that there are very deep wounds in her genital area, apart from severe injuries to her inner organs. On Monday, the old woman underwent emergency surgery.

On Tuesday, Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohammed Riyas visited her at the hospital and recorded her statement. The investigation into the rape case is led by K Karthik IPS.

There is a minor improvement in the 75-year-old woman’s health status as she remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital post-surgery. The doctors have advised to start her on a fluid diet in the next 24 hours.

The functions of her kidneys have become normal. She is still being given oxygen support. The old woman is treated with antibiotics to prevent her from contracting any bacterial infections on the wounds and injuries on her body.

The medical bulletin released by the Kolenchery Medical College Hospital also stated that there the woman’s mental status is also getting better.
