Kerala journalist killed in an accident involving IAS officer

A Kerala Journo was killed in a road accident in the early hours on Saturday. According to police, Survey Director Sreeram Venkitaraman's car rammed into the journo's bike killing him on the spot.

Thiruvananthapuram: A 35-year-old journalist was killed when his motorcycle was hit by a car driven by an inebriated IAS officer here early on Saturday.

According to reports, Survey Director Sreeram Venkitaraman was driving the car which rammed into K Muhammed Basheer's motorcycle, killing him on the spot. The incident happened around 1 am.

Basheer was Thiruvananthapuram bureau chief of Malayalam daily Siraj.

"There were conflicting statements. We have now confirmed from independent witnesses that Sreeram Venkitaraman was driving the vehicle," Thiruvananthapuram Police Commissioner Dhinendra Kashyap said.

A woman was also in the car when the accident took place, police said.

Eyewitness told reporters that a man, in an inebriate state, was driving the car rashly. While the young IAS officer reportedly told police that his friend, the woman, was driving the car.

However, a senior police official said that the woman has in her statement said Venkitaraman was behind the wheels.

Earlier, the police had said blood sample of one person had been taken, while some legal formalities have to be followed for collecting the samples of the other person.

Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) has demanded a proper and truthful investigation in the case. Gurudin has assured media personnel that the probe would be done scientifically.

Venkitaraman, who is also said to be injured, has been admitted to a private hospital. A case has been registered under section IPC279 (rash driving on a public way) and 304A (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder), police said.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala and Devaswom minister Kadakkampally Surendran were among those who expressed grief at the death of the journalist, who left behind his wife and two children.

Kerala journalist killed after ‘drunk’ IAS officer’s car rams into bike   

Thiruvananthapuram: A journalist was killed in a car-bike accident here on Saturday early morning. Survey Director Sriram Venkataraman’s car rammed into a bike killing Thiruvananthapuram unit chief of Siraj newspaper and Malappuram native K M Basheer (35). Sriram was also injured in the accident and has been admitted at the private hospital here. 
There was a woman also in the car. However, Sriram has given statement to police that he was not driving the car, but his friend. But eyewitness to the accident said that the male inside the car was driving. Eyewitness also said that the person was drunk and the car was overspeeding. Police said that they will check the CCTV visuals to confirm this.
The accident took place near Museum police station on the wee hours of Saturday. The car rammed into the bike parked on the side of the road.
At first, police didn’t take the woman into custody and had let her off. They contacted her over phone only when media persons questioned this move.
The car is registered in the name of a woman Wafa Firoz in Thiruvananthapuram.
Basheer who started his journalistic career as regional reporter of Siraj in Tirur has also worked as Malappuram staff reporter and Thiruvananthapuram bureau chief.
