Kannur Special Sub jail becomes the first ‘green jail’ in Kerala

Kannur sub-jail in Kerala has become the state's first green jail. The jail has implemented various schemes including farming initiatives in the jail premises and the inmates are trained in the skills.

Kannur: Kannur Special Sub Jail in Kannur district of Kerala has been declared to be the first green jail in the State. The jail manages different types of wastes generated here in cooperation with Haritha Keralam Mission, Suchitwa Mission and Clean Kerala company, besides implementing farming initiatives in the premises.

The jail bagged the ‘Green Jail’ title by converting and using biodegradable wastes for different purposes including as manure, the wastes are completely cleared from the jail premises with the help of Clean Kerala company.

E PJayarajan, the State Minister for Industries and Sports, officially performed the launch of the fish farming project and declared the Kannur Special sub-jail a green jail. Prisons and Correctional services Director-General Rishi Raj Singh presided over the function.

All organic waste would be used for farming. The staff and inmates have been trained for making manure from the organic waste generated at the prison. Famous writer T Padmanabhan handed over the books from his personal library set aside for the inmates.
