Guruvayur temple witnessed 186 weddings in the most auspicious Chingam month of the year. Apart from weddings, 689 first 'rice giving ceremonies' (Choroonu or Annaprasanam) of children were also held in the temple.

Thrissur: The famous Guruvayur Sri Krishna temple here in Kerala witnessed unprecedented number of weddings on Sunday with 186 couples tying their nuptial knot in front of the deity.

The temple witnessed a huge rush of devotees and wedding parties as it is the month of Chingam which is considered to be the most auspicious month of the year, according to the Malayalam calendar.

Apart from weddings, 689 first 'rice giving ceremonies' (Choroonu or Annaprasanam) of children were also held in the temple.

Even when the prayers were going on inside the sanctum sanctorum the 'wedding mandapams' were crowded with people waiting for their turn to tie the sacred knot.

There was heavy traffic, as major parking centres were filled and the vehicles were parked by the roadside.

The officials said that many more weddings are scheduled in this month of Chingam and the rush of devotees is likely to be high.

Thrissur: Huge crowd gather at guruvayoor temple on sunday as the day occupy with one of the special muhurta in the malayalam month of chingam. 186 marriages and 689 Annaprasanam or choroonu (the first rice giving ceremony of a child  conducted before Lord Guruvayurappan) was held. When the temple was open, all three wedding halls crowded so that they could enter the Mandapam without any special moments. The temple complex was already busy with the wedding party from early morning. Traffic tightened as parking grounds filled with vehicles. Officials said there were still good muhurta in the month of Chingam and that there would be congestion in the coming days.
