Death toll reaches 42 in flood-hit Karnataka
The death toll in flood-hit Karnataka on Monday mounted to 42.
As per an official data, "Since August 1, 42 people have lost their lives while 5, 81,897 persons have been evacuated from 2,694 flood-hit villages of the state."
A total of 48 Relief teams are providing flood relief in Karnataka as situation is steadily improving.

One rescue personnel manages to reach the bank at Hanumanahalli, after a rescue boat capsized in Koppal
Five rescue personnel – three firefighters and two NDRF men – who were heading towards the Virupapur Gaddi (island) in Koppal district in a rubber boat to bring the stranded people to safer place were washed away in the roaring river as their boat toppled in the middle of the river after it collided with a tree on Monday.
While one of them has managed to swim and reach the bank at Hanumanahalli, the remaining four were rescued using army chopper.

A house collapsed in Narasimharajapura, Chikkamagaluru district due to flooding conditions prevailing through out the state. Around 112 houses have collapsed in this area due to heavy rains.

Deve Gowda writes to PM Modi, seeks Rs 5,000 crore as interim relief
Former Prime Minister and JD(S) leader HD Deve Gowda on Monday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi outlining the severity of the floods in Karnataka and sought an interim relief of Rs 5,000 crore to tide over the situation in the state.
In his letter, Deve Gowda urged Modi to declare the disaster caused by the floods as a national calamity.

Karnataka CM announces Rs 5 lakh compensation for victims in Belthangady, Dakshina Kannada
Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa expressed hope that the situation in flood-ravaged parts of the state will be back to normal in four to six days as there had been a let-up in the rains.
"Five bridges & 300 houses have been damaged or completely destroyed in the floods in Dakshina Kannada district. These families will receive a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each. As an emergency relief, Rs 10,000 will be distributed to the victims," said Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa, talking to the reporters.
The chief minister also expressed confidence of cooperation from the Centre in taking up relief measures, by releasing funds.
Yediyurappa is touring flood affected areas of Dakshina Kannada and Mysuru districts on August 12 to oversee the rescue and relief works and will also hold meetings with officials there.
He will tour Shivamogga and neighbouring areas on August 13.

A rescue boat, carrying five rescue personnel, capsizes while carrying out rescue operations in Koppal.
Four personnel were later saved by the rescue team.
According to reports, 70 residents including 25 foreigners have been rescued so far from the region.
Over 380 people at Virupapura gaddi in Koppal have been stranded due to severe floods in the region.

A Check Dam constructed at the Mandovi river was completely washed away as heavy rains continue to pound the district of Uttara Kannada.
According to reports, two villages are expected to be inundated by the flood water rushing through the check dam pathway. Besides, two thousand hectre cultivational area is expected to be submerged under the flood water.
Check dams are small, temporary dam to counteract erosion by reducing the velocity of water flow.

Parts of Hampi UNESCO World Heritage Site in Ballari district remains submerged following the release of water from the Tungabhadra Dam on Sunday.
Heritage monuments including the Kondandarama temple, Hampi Salu Mantapa Mrkandeshwara Temple are also submerged in water.

Kodagu landslide: 12 feared trapped in the mud as rescue op continues
Following incessant rains in kodagu district of Karnataka, a line of houses located on top of Manikanda hill were completly destroyed as a massive landslide has buried 12 lives so far with many still feared trapped in the mud, alive.
Rescue operations are underway to locate the trapped ones in the midst to mud, tress and destroyed coffee plants.

The state disaster monitoring centre has also said that 5, 81,702 people have been evacuated from the flood-hit areas and a total of 17 districts are worst affected.
However, rainfall has reduced across central, coastal and northern districts of Karnataka for the first time since August 4.

Bengaluru: An official release has said the death toll has risen to 40 as several regions in coastal and central Karnataka face the worst calamity in almost half a century.
Earlier, Union Home Minister Amit Shah conduced an aerial survey of flood affected areas in Belagavi district and Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa joined him in the exercise.
The world heritage site Hampi along the banks of Tungabhadra River has been inundated with flood water, after over 1.70 lakh cusecs of water was released from a reservoir.
Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Sunday said the preliminary estimate of flood-related loss in the state was Rs 10,000 crore even as he urged the Centre to release Rs 3,000 crore as immediate aid.
As many as 3.14 lakh people have been evacuated and of them 2.18 lakh people are staying in 924 relief camps.
In the wake of series of landslides, the national highway connecting Bengaluru and Mangaluru will remain closed at least till Monday, official sources said.
