Dhanbad: A woman from Dhanbad in Jharkhand has been allegedly tortured for years by her husband and in-laws for not giving birth to a son. The incident came to light after the victim Ishrat Praveen, a resident of the Dhanbad Naya Bazar area, approached the Dhanbad Mahila Police Station seeking action against her husband and in-laws. She has lodged a written complaint against them, police said.
Praveen got married to Faheem Akhtar, a resident of Asansol in West Bengal in 2010. Her ordeal started the following year when she gave birth to a girl child. Initially, she was just taunted by her mother-in-law for being unable to give birth to a son but things took a turn for the worse after she gave birth to another daughter in 2013.

She alleged that after the birth of her second daughter verbal taunts turned into physical abuse as her husband started to assault her demanding a son. The torture became unbearable for her when she gave birth to her third daughter.
" Two years later, my second daughter was born, which is when the abuse went up even further. Finally, when the third daughter was born, the torture knew no bounds," said Praveen. " My husband and my in-laws drove me out of the house after beating me up," she added. Police sources said that the matter is being investigated.
