CBI arrests 9 in Swarnarekha hydropower project scam

Special CBI court has taken cognizance against all the charge-sheeted persons and summons have been issued to everyone. The CBI started the investigation by registering an FIR on June 2, 2016, after the scandal surfaced.

Ranchi: The CBI has arrested nine people including three senior officials of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Bhopal and the then chairman of Jharkhand State Electricity Board (JSEB) in connection with the scam of Rs 20.87 crore in maintenance and repair of the Swarnarekha hydropower project, Sikidiri.

Shivendra Nath Verma, the then Chairman of JSEB Ranchi, Alok Shar, the then Financial Member of JSEB Ranchi, Sr. DGM Sunil Kumar Majumdar of BHEL Bhopal, AGM RK Arya of BHEL PDX Bhopal, Gurukrit Singh Sachdeva of BHEL Bhopal, M/s Northern Power Erectors Ltd., Navneet Sagar Mittal, Director of New Delhi and his company, M/s Fibratech, Meerut, Ashutosh Mittal and his company are the accused named in the charge sheet.

Tender was floated for the year 2011-12 for the maintenance and repair of the Swarnarekha Hydroelectric Project Secidari and had received an application for a minimum of Rs 59.75 lakh and a maximum of Rs 20.87 crore.

While a maximum of Rs 2.5 crore was to be spent in maintenance and repair, the then chairman of JSEB and the three preferred officers of BHEL gave the tender to the company that had the highest rate for criminal conspiracy and misused the post.
