Srinagar: Several videos showed photojournalists from various media outlets reportedly faced police wrath on Tuesday as they were performing their professional duties while covering the Muharram procession at Srinagar's Jahangir Chowk. According to reports, the police lathicharged the journalists, due to which several journalists are injured including damages to their equipment.

Wasim Andrabi, a photojournalist with an publication, said: "We were carrying out our usual professional duties when Sher Ghadi police beat up several journalists for no reason and also said that an FIR will also be registered". Andrabi said that he along with scores of media men were thrashed while covering the Muharram procession today, which was foiled by the authorities. "We were performing our professional duties, which is not a crime," he said.

Earlier, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has banned Alam Sharif processions in and around Srinagar because of Muharram. However, several youths tried to stage a procession at the Jahangir Chowk, Srinagar, which was foiled by the police and several youths were detained.
