Kinnaur: The tribal region of Kinnaur is the most inaccessible and difficult geographical area of Himachal Pradesh where people are still deprived of many basic facilities. Amid lack of proper road connectivity and better health facilities, many people including pregnant women have to face a lot of trouble.
The total population of Kinnaur district is around 90 thousand which lives amidst the hilly mountainous area. Here pregnant women take hours to reach the hospital for deliveries and at times they even end up having miscarriage or themselves died on way due to poor maternity facilities.

Some areas including Nichar Khand, Nathpa, Garsho, Kangranag, Rung, Taranda, Panvi, Ramni, Kalpa Khand, Barang and Pooh come under this category which is deprived of basic infrastructure facilities. Here people need to travel on foot to get their treatment. Even after years of Independence, the government is unable to focus on these areas.
The State Health Department is working towards providing the facility of Asha workers and doctors at the time of emergency in these areas but even the ambulance services take hours to reach the rural areas in between the hills with no roads. Locals carry the patients on cots or temporary makeshifts to reach hospitals.
Chairperson of Kinnaur Women's Congress Saroj Negi from Kalpa said that she has asked the government to appoint more health department employees and doctors in Kinnaur and launch door to door health services.
Meanwhile, Lalita Pancharas of Khwangi village stated that even after three years of Jai Ram Thakur government, women in Kinnaur still have to go to Rampur and Shimla to get treatment, as many posts of specialist doctors at Reckong Peo regional hospital are vacant.
On the other hand, Kinnaur Chief Medical Officer Dr Sonam Negi said that recently the government has filled the posts of Radiologist and Gynae doctor at Reckong Peo regional hospital.
"Along with the deployment of doctors at various hospitals of Kinnaur, demand has been put before the government over enhancing the medical facilities for women. Soon, efforts will be made to provide good health services to women of the inaccessible area of the district," Dr Nego said.
