New Delhi: The Supreme Court has granted two weeks time to the Election Commission and the central government on the PIL filed by Mumbai based advocate Sunil Ahya questioning the authenticity of the source codes of EVM, VVPAT & EVM tracking software (ETS) which may change the election results.

Sunil Ahya had moved the Supreme Court challenging the legal provision mandating six months jail term if a complaint against the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) turns out to be false.

This PIL asks for decriminalization so that anyone can come up with a fake complaint against EVM and roam free, defaming the demeaning Election Commission.

Intro:The Supreme Court today granted 2 weeks time to the Election Commission of India to respond to a PIL seeking independent software audit of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) before and during the voting in the general elections 2019 to ensure their integrity.

Body:The PIL states that an audit would identify weak links in the whole chain right from the deployment of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) till the declaration of results."Introduction of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trial (VVPAT)" may merely remain as output devices (printers) for voters to satisfy themselves that there votes have been cast correctly . However a concerted subversion of source codes of EVM , VVPAT and EVM tracking software(ETS) may yet subvert the election results.
