Jaya Jaitley, two others, convicted in 2001 corruption case

A Delhi court has convicted Jaya Jaitly, former president of Samata Party and two others in a corruption case of 2001. The case related to a defence deal was exposed by a news portal and had forced the then defence minister, George Fernandes, to resign from the office.

New Delhi: Jaya Jaitly, former president of Samata Party, and two others have been convicted in an alleged corruption case of 2001 by a Delhi court here.

Central Bureau of Investigation judge Virendra Bhat convicted Jaitly and Gopal two others - Pacherwal and retired Major General SP Murgai - who then worked with her in the party.

The case, related to a defence deal, was registered on the basis of an expose by a news portal in 2000.

A charge sheet was filed against Jaitly and others in 2006. They have been convicted under the relevant charges of the Prevention of Corruption Act (PC Act).

The expose had forced the then defence minister George Fernandes to resign from Atal Bihari-led government.
