New Delhi: The markets of Delhi will have diyas made by sex workers from the brothels of Gautam Buddha Road. These women are busy beautifying diyas in the wake of the coming festival of lights – Diwali.

It is a joint initiative of the Delhi Legal Services Authority (DLSA) and Delhi Police to make these sex workers self-reliant financially.

They are of the view that this move will give them employment and they can start new innings in their life.

As per the information, there are more than 30 brothels on GB Road located in Kamla Market area of the national capital.

In these brothels, more than two thousand sex workers live and their lives are all about the trade of their bodies.

At the initiative of the DLSA and the Kamla Market Police, about 200 women, who were involved in prostitution, have decided to shun their traditional but humiliating job.

To help them start a new life, the DLSA and the Delhi Police have started a workshop where the DLSA will provide them legal help to join the mainstream of the society, while the Delhi Police is teaching them skills to earn their livelihoods.

Aim to make these women self-reliant

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Central District, Sanjay Bhatia, the Kamala Market Police is imparting them training to make colourful diyas.

"The police will be the buyer of the goods prepared by these sex workers from the GB Road. We believe that this will not only encourage them to give a new meaning to their lives but also help them to give up prostitution and become self-reliant," he said.

DCP Sanjay Bhatia said that the police will also take strict action against those who force a minor girl or a woman into flesh trade.

He said that if any woman is being exploited, then she should inform the police immediately by dialling 112 or contacting the police station in-charge. Their identity will be kept secret and cash reward will also be given to those giving information.

At the same time, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Anil Kumar also said that this initiative has been taken by the Delhi Legal Services Authority to make sex workers self-reliant.

DLSA secretary Gautam Manan said that these women, exploited by the society, can get help to get back their rights under the judicial process. For this, a three-day camp has been organized in the area.
