Delhi Police register FIR against the makers of GitHub app 'Sulli Deals'

The Delhi Police Special Cell has registered an FIR against the makers of a mobile application 'Sulli Deals', which was hosted on the 'GitHub' platform. The Delhi Police reacted after a complaint was filed on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal. The word "Sulli" is a derogatory term used against Muslim women.

New Delhi: The Delhi Police Special Cell has registered an FIR against the makers of a mobile application 'Sulli Deals', which was hosted on the 'GitHub' platform. The Delhi Police reacted after a complaint was filed on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal. The word "Sulli" is a derogatory term used against Muslim women.

This app had reportedly stolen the social media pictures of Muslim women and was uploading them as 'Sulli Deal of the Day'. The pictures were used inappropriately and the app users were being actively encouraged to auction for these pictures. So far over 100 Muslim women including prominent journalists and activists from India and other countries have been victimised by this app.

The 'GitHub' platform has removed the controversial app from its platform. All the photos of the victims have been removed as well. However, the Delhi Police is yet to find the people responsible for the mobile application. Meanwhile, Delhi Commission for Women has issued a notice to DCP, Cyber Cell, Delhi Police in this matter. DCW has also sought a copy of the registered FIR, details of the accused involved in the app and police action taken so far. The Editors Guild of India has also expressed concerns over the derogatory and misogynistic app.

This is not the first instance where pictures of Muslim women were misused on a large scale in the country. Earlier in May, an Indian YouTube Channel 'Liberal Doge' streamed a live video, posting misogynistic comments on the Pakistani women celebrating Eid al-Fitr. It is being reported on multiple social media handles that the YouTube channel is being run by a man named Ritesh Jha. However, the police have found no connection between him and the 'Sulli Deals' app.
