After securing bail in the fodder scam case, RJD Supremo Lalu Prasad is celebrating his 74th birthday at his daughter's residence in Delhi.

Patna: Former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav has turned 74 today. This is the first birthday celebration for Prasad and his family in three years as the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo was lodged at Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi in connection with the fodder scam case. Prasad was born on 11 June 1948 in Bihar's Phulwaria town and he went to become a member of Parliament at the age of 29.

Jharkhand High Court had granted bail to Prasad on April 17 in the alleged irregularity to the tune of of Rs 3.13 crore in the Dumka Treasury case. He has so far been convicted in four out of five cases related to a multi-crore fodder scam. After getting bail, Prasad is receiving medical facilities at his daughter's residence in Delhi. Meanwhile, relatives and supporters poured their warm wishes to him on this auspicious occasion.

On 3 October 2013, the CBI special court sentenced Lalu to five years' imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25 lakh in the fodder scam case which lasted for nearly 17 years. The special CBI court in 2017 convicted him in another scam case of 89.27 lakh in the Deoghar treasury case. In 2018, the court convicted him in the Rs 33.67-crore Chaibasa treasury case. Hearing in the alleged scam of Rs 184 crore from Doranda treasury is still underway in the CBI Court.

Prasad began his political carrier as the general secretary of the Patna University Students' Union in 1970 and became its president in 1973. Contesting from Janta Party-S led by Raj Narain, he managed to win the Bihar Legislative Assembly election in 1980. Later in 1989, he was also elected for Lok Sabha in the V. P. Singh government.
