Guwahati (Assam): Troops of the Assam Rifles in a joint operation with Assam Police apprehended a top-ranking United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent, ULFA (I) Cadre from Lalpahar in Assam's Tinsukia on July 12, the Indian Army's Eastern Command informed on Tuesday.
After receiving a specific input regarding the presence of a cadre belonging to the ULFA-I, a joint operation was launched in the Lekhapani area.
The insurgent has been identified as a SS Colonel of ULFA(I). He was suspected to be the Assistant Secretary of the group, police said.
He has been handed over to Tinsukia Police for further investigation.

Earlier in June, a suspected ULFA-I cadre was apprehended during an anti-insurgency operation jointly by the army and the Assam police at Kakodunga area.
However, the suspected 30-year-old ULFA-I cadre, who also had links with NSCN-IM, was declared brought dead when he was rushed to the Jorhat Medical College Hospital on feeling unwell.
