Golaghat (Assam): The death toll of Assam's Golaghat and Jorhat districts due to alleged consumption of spurious liquor has gone upto 127 with 200 others undergoing treatment in various hospitals across the state.
Doctor Vipul Kumar Das said, "The patients are suspected to have consumed poisoned methyl alcohol, now the incoming of new patients has lessened and we are also discharging some of them. We have also referred some of the patients to Jorhat Medical College."
Das further stated that among the patients, the number of males is more than that of females.
One incident occurred at the Salmora tea estate, the other took place at two remote villages under the Titabor sub-division of Jorhat district.
The locals said that several people consumed liquor in the tea estate on Thursday night after procuring the stock from a particular seller. Several of them took ill immediately and many were not even taken to the hospital.
State Excise minister Parimal Shuklabaidya had previously ordered a probe into the matter.
